Moore Personalities with ... Linda Sullivan

The most challenging aspect of owning my own business is...

Time management.  It's a 24/7 job for both Carl and I.  We have no employees to rely on and there is always something to do, someone to see, or something that needs attention.  But we do love our jobs and our shop, and consider ourselves very blessed to be able to own and continue to operate our shop (which is entering its seventh year in business) with such a supportive community like the Sandhills to call our home.

Where do you see your business in five years?

Five years is a long time in the quilting industry! Like most art forms and creative industries, evolution can happen overnight.  Today, new fabric collections are being released at a record pace. Quilting groups young and old are popping up in local communities and online too.  Information, patterns, trends, fabrics, and online tutorials (like mini classes) about all things "quilting" are being shared at lightning pace through social media.

Quilting is no longer considered a hobby that grandma does in her spare time. New quilters and sewists, young and old, are being exposed to the industry through Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Instagram, and Pinterest.  In just the last three years, the quilting industry has seen a resurgence in popularity and welcomed a younger group of sewists into the fold, ranging in age from 20-45, who are very active online and within their local communities.

So with all that said, we see Linderella's Quilt Works as an ever-changing, and ever-evolving business, in lock step with the changes to our industry.  Our motto has always been to provide our customers with the latest and greatest quilting fabrics, notions and patterns the industry has to offer, to always be on the "cutting edge." To do that, our business model has remained flexible and ready to embrace the future.

One thing does remain steadfast at Linderella's Quilt Works - you'll always find great customer service, top quality designer quilting fabrics, the latest and greatest notions and patterns, and a fun and bright quilting time for all. We guarantee it!

Describe Moore County in five words or less.

Growing, growing, growing!  The growth in the county over the last 5 years has been enormous.  Moore County is a great place to live and raise a family, so we hope it continues to grow, grow, grow.

Favorite thing about the area.

The diversity of its population. We meet a lot of people and have become friends with many of our customers throughout these last seven years at Linderella's, and what always amazes us is the diversity of Moore County's population. Not only do people gravitate here from the East Coast but they come from the West Coast, Hawaii, Alaska and even Europe. And from all walks of life. Here you'll find young professionals, retired professionals, entrepreneurs, artists and of course, golfers. An interesting fact - did you know that some of the area's best quilters are also golfers too?

Something most people don’t know about me is…

Home Ec was my least favorite class. I remember making a dress on my Mom's Singer sewing machine. The dress turned out just awful, horribly sewn, mismatched seams, and really a mess. Needless to say, the dress ended up in the trash and I never touched another sewing machine again until my late 30s when I took a beginning quilting class at a local shop and loved it.

Who inspires you?

Our customers, each and every one of them! Our customers are bursting with energy, enthusiasm, and creativity. Carl and I are continually in awe of the amount of creativity and talent, and the sheer love of the craft that our customers have and continue to have for quilting and for our shop. They are truly a delight and make our job so much fun and a pleasure to come to work each and every day.

My guilty pleasure is...

Quilting for myself. The shop always comes first and there is always a shop sample that needs completing, a new tote bag to make, or a new fabric collection that needs to be placed on the website. And, adding to that, a few hundred other things that owning a retail shop requires, so when I can sneak in an hour or two of quilting just for me, it's a real treat.

A Helping Hand to Fight Hunger

Under the watchful eye of volunteers, we rolled up our sleeves, adjusted our hairnets, and were ready to get to work. Thirty stations took up most of the gym, each one laden with rice and supplements, scales and package sealers. Ten to 12 people manned each table and without a starting bell or whistle we dove in. Our goal: 300,000 meals ready for shipment.

OK, Southern Pines isn't New York City, but for you new residents to the area, I'm Dustin Hoffman to your Jon Voight. Let me educate you on the nuances of So.Pines driving. No taxi slapping needed.

Southern Pines, in particular, takes a little getting used to. I can’t speak to Pinehurst, heck I still get turned around over there. Maybe some of you can post your own tips for figuring out the Golf Capital, but for me, I’ll focus on the Pines. You may have to pass a driving test, but that won’t prepare you for the street layouts or the one ways. Trust me, you’re in for a treat. So here’s a list of helpful tips for the first couple months of your (hopefully) long residency.

Distances to popular destinations around North Carolina and beyond
By Amanda Jakl

Moore County and the Sandhills are great, but let's be honest, sometimes you just need to get away for the weekend. One of the best parts of living here is how conveniently located Moore County is within the state. Not too far from the coast, not too far from the mountains.

To encourage a little bit of fun this summer, we decided to put together a list of some popular destinations (with links when we could find them and if they made sense) within a 6-hour drive of Southern Pines. So if you live in Pinehurst, Aberdeen or anywhere else in Moore County, the times and miles will only be slightly different.

This list is by no means comprehensive. Think of it more as whetting your appetite for a road trip. And to be quite honest, most of the list is based on places we'd like to visit.
